PN, EU Funds, and Gozo
Maltastar (22-05-2009)

This MEP campaign is quite a flimsy one for PN’s side and the message they are trying to get through is quite a confused one. I always ‘admired’ PN strategists in that they were capable of portraying a can of worms as an attractive candy box but this time it is a different story.

Given also that the undercurrents they are capable of stirring are always more than enough to keep us on our toes but overtly at least by watching those stupid billboards it seems they are losing their touch.

I must also comment on the individual performance of some of the PN candidates. It is nothing personal but obviously since they are representing their party whatever they say and do reflects on the credibility of the whole party. For instance I was watching Alan Deidun on TVM this week. He was rebutting the fact that Government failed to request the EU commission to draw up a socio-

economic report with regards to Gozo’s needs so that Gozo would be entitled to separate funds as an island region. Mr Deidun tried to justify this by saying that Government could not do so because Gozo got the maximum available funds under various EU programmes.

The question I am putting forward to Mr Deidun is this: if what you are stating is true, how come that now your party in its manifesto pledged that PN will request such a report to be drawn up?

I just wonder how these people try to distort things. These are undeniable facts and government did not submit such a request as stated in the declaration attached to the Accession Treaty. It is not the first time we hear about someone forgetting to file something in time or forgetting to file it at all – and I firmly believe that this is another instance to the detriment of Gozo’s wellbeing.
